| NOTE: Hash Marks may vary from hash to hash--if you are a visiting hasher, make sure you are present during Chalk Talk |
| Since the hash prides itself on having no rules, the following remarks about trail marking are based upon tradition. |
| If you use any markings besides these standard marking, it must be announced before the start of the hash at the chalk talk. |
| Hash |
 |
A blob of flour or other substance that indicates a trail. Three consecutive hash marks traditionally indicates true trail. Watch out for YBF! |
| Check |
 |
Indicates that the trail may change direction at this point. Here hounds spread out and look for trail. From the check, true trail will begin again in about 100 yards in any direction. There also may be one or more false trails from the check. |
| False Trail |
 |
Three parallel lines across the trail indicate that the trail is false and the hounds should return to the last check to look for the true trail. |
| Hare Arrow |
 |
An arrow laid only by hares. A hare arrow always indicates true trail. Hounds may also mark arrows, but (in some hashes) hound arrows lack the three hash marks on the shaft and may or may not indicate true trail. |
| Pack Arrow |
 |
Used by Hounds to indicate trail direction in order to help the DFLs along the trail. |
| Back Check |
 |
Back Check indicates that true
trail can be found anywhere back from this mark to the last check mark--if there is a number inside the circle, go back that many marks and try to locate true trail from there |
| Beer Near |
 |
Indicates that there's beer within 100 yards or so. When used to indicate a beer check, Front Running Bastards (FRBs) must wait until the Dead Fu*king Last (DFL) hound arrives before proceeding on trail. The beer check's purpose if twofold, to provide refreshment and to regroup the pack. When this mark is used in conjunction with "ON-IN" it indicates that the end of the trail is very near. |
| Regroup |
 |
Indicates that the hounds must wait and regroup the pack at this point. FRBs must wait until the DFL hound arrives before proceeding on trail. A regroup is typically placed at a scenic overlook where logistical constraints preclude a beer check. Traditionally used on Dead hare Trails |
| Turkey-Eagle Trail Split |
 |
At this point the trail splits into a segment which is easy (turkey) and a segment which is difficult (eagle). The two segments will eventually rejoin somewhere before the trail ends or at the end itself. |
| Boob Check |
 |
This is a check wherein only harriettes may look for trail. The pack cannot proceed until a harriette finds true trail. In some hashes, this is used as a regroup and harriettes are
encouraged to flash before proceeding. If there is a phallic symbol instead of boobs, it is considered a dick check and male hashers are encouraged likewise |
| You Been Fucked |
 |
The hares have just f*cked you. Go back to last check point. |
| Other nonstandard marks are also used at the discretion of the hares. These include, but are not limited to dick checks, photo op, etc. When nonstandard marks are used they must be fully explained during the chalk talk. |
| NOW THESE ARE NOT RULES, THESE ARE MARKING TRADITIONS |
